Escape the DIY this Bank Holiday

Every year, 220,000 of us end up in A&E in the pursuit of ‘home improvement’ – and the DIY accident statistics peak over bank holiday weekends. This August bank holiday, why not play it safe and jet off – leaving the toolkit behind. But in your haste don’t forget travel insurance: accidents can happen on holiday, but at least you won’t be one of the 41,000 people who fall off a ladder each year getting jobs done at home.

Paris Bank Holiday

Here are two of our favourite long weekend getaways, both less than three hours’ travel away.

Paris: Paris is perfect for the solo traveller: meander along the banks of the Seine, feast your eyes on the spectacular grand buildings, take in some culture – or don’t. Sit instead in a pavement café with your book and a glass of wine or three and watch the world go by. One thing you must do: climb up to the Arc de Triomphe’s panoramic viewing terrace and gaze in wonder at the city.

Barcelona: Barcelona boasts all the features of other top European cities – excellent shopping, delicious food, eye-catching architecture, oodles of culture and a buzzing nightlife – and one thing more: the beach. In booking a trip to Barcelona, you don’t have to make that choice between city and sand. One thing you must do: listen to jazz in the fabulous L’Auditori concert hall.

And if you’re feeling guilty that you should be using the bank holiday weekend to catch up with your DIY, think of it as a reconnaissance trip: want some ideas for your long-promised extension? Feast your eyes on Parisian and Catalan architecture. If next year’s project is the bathroom, you would have to travel a long way to find public changing rooms cleaner, more efficient or comfortable than those in Iceland.

The jobs on your ‘To Do’ list aren’t going anywhere, neither is the toolkit. It doesn’t mean that you can’t…
