Eating out has to be one of the great joys of a holiday, and surely the best dining experience comes with an epic view, where your jaw drops not just to taste the delicious local morsels, but in awe at the scenery beyond the table. There are some truly fabulous ‘restaurants with a view’ to be found on your travels. At Explorer Travel Insurance, we’ve been making both our mouths water and our eyes bulge as we compiled a list of our favourites.
Puglia, Italy: prepare yourself for a magical evening in the Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, a centuries-old restaurant that sits in a limestone cave carved out of the cliff face. Jutting out 74 feet above sea level, this enchanting spot in Polignano a Mare affords diners the choice of gazing out over the blue-green Adriatic, or being hypnotised by the waves lapping the shore below. Stunning views, a warm summer night’s breeze and world-class food: an evening spent here will be utterly memorable.
Santorini, Greece: hop eastwards to another beautiful sea, the steel blue Aegean, and settle down on the terrace of Ambrosia in the village of Oia to feast your eyes on paradise. Perched on the edge of Santorini’s volcanic crater, this Grecian gem has spectacular views of the island-dotted Aegean, and is a glorious setting in which to enjoy succulent baby calamari in pesto and ouzo, or shrimp with grilled mango. To ensure you bag one of those much-desired terrace tables, it is advisable to book a month in advance.
Chamonix, France: sitting on the summit of Brévent, Le Panoramic certainly lives up to its name. With a good, honest menu offering pasta, soup and fantastic steak, it’s the perfect spot for lunch – or even just a croissant and chocolat chaud. Easily accessible by gondola and cable car, you can take in the breath-taking views of Mont-Blanc without losing any breath getting there.
The Shard, London: for an urban dining experience with truly spectacular views, you don’t have to go further than our own capital. Housed on the 33rd floor of the sky-stroking Shard, Hutong offers the best of northern Chinese cuisine such as sizzling prawns with jasmine tealeaves, or mango cheesecake with sesame dumplings. With floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over London’s world-famous skyline, and traditional, delicate Oriental décor, Hutong is the ideal setting for a very special evening.
Rangali Island, Maldives: if all this talk of dining up in the clouds is making you dizzy, perhaps heading to the sea bed is more for you. A sure-fire contender for most beautiful restaurant in the world, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant sits five metres below the surface and is surrounded by stunning coral gardens. Enjoy exquisite contemporary European cuisine as you gaze in wonder at the vast array of sea life in glorious technicolour.
